About this place

Founded by Akbar in 1571 as the new capital of the Mughal Empire and abandoned just fifteen years later, Fatehpur Sikri is an exceptionally well-preserved complex of red sandstone palaces, courts and mosques 40 km from Agra. Highlights include the colossal Buland Darwaza gate, the Jama Masjid, the Diwan-i-Khas with its central pillar throne, and the tomb of Sufi saint Salim Chishti. UNESCO-listed.

Open daily from sunrise to sunset, typically 6 am to 6 pm. The Jama Masjid courtyard remains open longer for prayers.
